Introduction
============
``NCIS`` is an acronym for the ``Norwegian Current Information System``. It is a system
for model-based statistical information of currents in Norwegian waters. The point is to
provide information on the normal state and the variability both of the currents and
dispersion by the current system. The system is available on iternet, presently using
the `provisional link `_.
Note that NCIS does **not** provide operational information on the actual current
situation today. For this purpose, use MET's operational products on `yr.no
`_.
The user interface provides a map of Norwegian Waters with a choice of three background
map layers, the bottom topography, mean or max current speed. Unfortunately, the present
choice of colour scale does not make the current maps useful for quantitave information.
The area of the selected archive (presently only NorKyst800) is highlited.
Clicking in the highlighted area provide information on this position, called a
:ref:`station`, including a series of charts. From the right panel it is also
possible to request a custom :ref:`dispersion map`.
